Family Math Nights Coordinator – to be filled by a UNR Graduate Student

Our Family Math Night(FMN) Coordinator does the following:

  • oversees the FMN program, including: planning, running, promoting, and evaluating.
  • develops a volunteer recruitment and retention program.
  • compile observations and feedback received to update/adjust activities to increase engagement and achieve program objectives.
  • assists with other key NNVMath programs such as MathRocks! contest series to have a better understanding of math enrichment.opportunities available to students, how they run, the level of commitment needed to run them, etc.

This position is funded by the Regents Service Program and is only open to qualified graduate students. Position is 20 hours per week starting in August and going through the end of May. Stipend is $1700/month with tuition benefits and health insurance through UNR’s Regents Service Program. This is a supervisory position. Must be enrolled in the College of Education Grad Program with a STEM or Education related undergraduate degree.

Family Math Nights Assistant Coordinators – 2 positions to be filled by UNR Undergraduate Students

Our Family Math Nights (FMN) Assistant Coordinators (AC)s do the following:

  • Assist FMN Coordinator in prep, planning and running of FMN events; be prepared to run a FMN.
  • Ensuring FMN volunteers have what they need to be successful, answer questions when grad unavailable.
  • Assist Competition Team Coach and learn about competition math.
  • Assist with other key NNVMath programs such as MathRocks! contest series to have a better understanding of math enrichment opportunities available to students, how they run, the level of commitment needed to run them, etc.

This position is funded by the Regents Service Program and is only open to qualified undergraduate students. Position is 20 hours per week though out the school year. Regents pays undergraduate positions $15/hour.

Competition Team Coach – to be filled by a UNR Graduate Student

Our Competition Team is composed of students in grades 7-12. Under the guidance of our head coach, this Competition Team Coach will do the following:

  • Coach & Mentor Competition Team (running practices with focus on teamwork and problem-solving skills)
  • Identify needs and create opportunities for members to learn missing competition skills from other members
  • Observe how members work together and reorganize to develop strong working partners within the team
  • Assist with other key NNVMath programs such as MathRocks! contest series to have a better understanding of math enrichment opportunities available to students, how they run, the level of commitment needed to run them, etc.

Needs strong problem-solving skills (does not require calculus) and experience being a part of a team. Must be willing to learn with the team and interested in exploring new areas of math (lots of number theory). An undergraduate degree in a math or a heavy math problem solving field (such as stats, physics, engineering, etc.) and/or experience with competition math is preferred.

Nevada Math is a non-profit located in Sparks, NV celebrating 10 years of providing math enrichment opportunities to kids in grades 1-12 in the Reno-Sparks area. Programs include contests, camps, Family Math Nights, and a competition team for students in grades 7-12. We are a volunteer intensive organization with an amazing and supportive community.
