Summer Math Camps

Our 2024 Summer Math Camps are returning to their original focus: challenging students who are typically left unchallenged in their school math class by focusing on competition math. Competition math takes students deeper into their fundamentals by introducing them to new math concepts. The journey goes sideways into number theory, counting, algebra, geometry, and combinatorics (another way of saying (statistics and probability). Camps emphasize thinking, logic, teamwork, problem solving, embracing challenge, and being persistent.

Camps include instruction hands-on math activities, puzzles, games, contest/test taking strategies, and outdoor breaks. Camp is primarily driven by Team Leaders who are experienced middle and high school math competitors from our Competition Team. Team Leaders provide the bulk of large group instruction with an additional Team Leader working with a small group of 2-3 students to ensure each camper is being supported and challenged. Adults are present to mentor and support our Camp Leaders.

After almost a decade of running camps, we have found this approach incredibly effective. Our Team Leaders make wonderful mentors to our younger campers while providing Team Leaders an opportunity to share their knowledge and impact the students coming after them. A number of our Team Leaders were originally campers themselves!

Camps are designed for students entering grades 4-7 in Fall 2024 who meet the minimum requirements (see FAQs below). Students in younger grades who meet the minimum requirements are welcome to attend as well.

Students will improve their foundational skills by learning and working on more advanced problems and concepts. MAKE SURE TO READ ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS BEFORE REGISTERING! REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN UNLESS CANCELLED MORE THAN 30 DAYS IN ADVANCE. REFUNDS REQUESTED MORE THAN 30 DAYS IN ADVANCE ARE SUBJECT TO A $10 CANCELLATION FEE.

Common Questions:

Is my child ready for Summer Math Camp (minimum requirements)?

Math camp is for students in grades going into grades 4-7 in the Fall 2024 who are either:

  • comfortable with double digit multiplication
  • comfortable with long division
  • grade level and unchallenged, or
  • working above grade level

Students in younger grades working above grade level AND comfortable with double digit multiplication and long division may also attend. If unsure your child meets the minimum requirements, email Sherry@NNVMath.org.

NOTE: Students who arrive to camp not meeting the multiplication and long division requirements, will be sent home and a refund will NOT be provided.

What topics will be covered at Summer Math Camp?

This is a placeholder tab content. It is important to have the necessary information in the block, but at this stage, it is just a placeholder to help you visualise how the content is displayed. Feel free to edit this with your actual content.

My child will miss a day, can I get a discount?

No. We limit the number of students who can register for each camp session and each registered student takes a space for the whole week.

NOTE: Math Camps are NOT daycare. Campers are expected to attend each day, all day. We understand that a camper may need to arrive late a day or leave early a day, but this should be the exception. Whenever a camper is absent, they are missing material that they need for a prior lesson. Please set your child up for success by having them at camp each day.

What do campers do at Math Camp?

Campers will do a variety of things each day and throughout the week. Between drop-off (8:30am) and camp start (9AM), campers will play math based board and card games. We start camp properly at 9 with short introductions to help them gain a sense of community and then move into the lessons and activities of the day. Campers will have an outside break each morning, during the lunch break, and afternoon. Each day will have multiple topics presented and at least 1 supporting activity. Camps are fun!

What topics will be covered?

Topics vary from camp to camp. We intentionally stay flexible to adapt to the campers. Topics covered are from the fields from Algebra, Geometry, Number Sense, and Combinatorics.

Is my child too advanced for Summer Math Camp?

If your child falls into any of the following, they’re likely too advanced:

  • Placed in the top 10 at MathCounts State competition
  • Has already taken Trig at high school or college level
  • If your child has taken classes through Art of Problem Solving or attended multi-week out of state math camps, contact Sherry@NNVMath.org

NOTE: SWAS middle school students are NOT too advanced unless they are taking classes outside of school

Is a discount possible?

We offer financial assistance to the following:

  • Families who cannot cover the cost of camp on their own,
  • Families undergoing an unexpected circumstance,
  • Families who could cover a week of camp but have a child wanting to attend multiple weeks,
  • Families who have multiple children wanting to attend and need support to make it happen.

Financial assistance is available due to the gracious generosity of members of our community. Every family is expected to contribute towards the registration fee. This allows us to spread our funds further and provide more support to more families.

Email Sherry@NNVMath.org to receive the Financial Assistance Application.
