Volunteer

Nevada Math is a volunteer-based organization. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to provide our programs.

Our volunteer needs are vast, from occasional volunteers to volunteers in leadership positions. These are unpaid positions.

For Adults – Regular and Leadership Roles

These roles either require or benefit from having a regular volunteer who is able to consistently able to be involved.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is responsible for the direction of Nevada Math and providing oversight of the organization. Board of Director members are elected by current board members and serve a term of 2 years and may serve multiple terms. Ours is a working board with each board members expected to make a yearly donation, attend bi-monthly board meetings, and be involved in some capacity. Board members should expect to volunteer approximately 36-72 hours per year (an average of 3-6 hours per month), depending on how they choose to be involved. To apply, complete this application and submit it to Sherry@NNVMath.org.

Head Room Proctor (4-5 positions)

The Head Room Proctor leads a team of volunteers overseeing students participating in our MathRocks! contests and the annual State of Nevada Mathematics Championship. The essential function of this position is to ensure participants follow the contest rules and maintain contest integrity during the contest administration.

To apply, please complete the volunteer paperwork at the bottom of this page and submit to Sherry@NNVMath.org. This position works with children and requires a background check through Nevada Math’s background check provider and completion of applicable UNR paperwork.

Contest Volunteer Coordinator – FILLED

Essential function of this position is to organize materials and oversee volunteers at MathRocks! monthly contests to provide what they need to be successful. This position continues to be filled by Leigh Morrell who has graciously served in this capacity since September 2020.

This position works with children and requires a background check through Nevada Math’s background check provider and completion of applicable UNR paperwork.

Competition Team Coach – (multiple positions)

Our Competition Team is the program that started Northern Nevada Math Club in 2012 when we first participated in the American Regions Mathematical League (ARML) team contest (yes, 2 years before we became a formal entity). Students in this program are in grades 7-12 (approximately ages 12-18), attend a range of Reno-Sparks schools, have various levels of support at the school they attend, and a range of abilities.

Traditionally, practices have been held on Sunday afternoons during the school year. However, open to alterative days and times. Ideally, a coaching “team” is preferred. This allows flexibility given the range of participant abilities and coach schedules. Competition math does not typically go beyond trig but goes sideways (for example, number theory is common in contest buy not in secondary school classes). Volunteers are welcome to learn with the participants.

To apply, please complete the volunteer paperwork at the bottom of this page and submit to Sherry@NNVMath.org. This position works with children and requires a background check through Nevada Math’s background check provider and completion of applicable UNR paperwork.

Contest Writing Committee

MathRocks! and the State of Nevada Mathematics Championship are written by our Contest Writing Committee. Members of this committee submit problems in the summer which are then organized, edited, and prepared for the upcoming program year. Members need to confirm that they don’t have a conflict of interest (such as a child who is participating in the contests at or near the level they are writing problems for). Because our contests are for grades 1-12, a wide variety of problem levels are needed. If you would like to join this committee, please contact Sherry@NNVMath.org.

This position does NOT interact with children.

For Adults – occasional positions

These positions are important and needed but are more flexible than the positions above.

Proctors

Each MathRocks! and the annual Nevada State Mathematics Championship needs 2 volunteer proctors to assist the Head Room Proctor during the contest. In this role, you will primarily hand out contest rounds, pick up answer sheets, and circulate during the round to ensure rules are being followed. Having a team of 3 proctors makes the rounds run more efficiently, allows an individual proctor to use the restroom, etc. If you can follow instructions and hold kids accountable to the rules as well, then you are perfect for this role!

To apply, please complete the volunteer paperwork at the bottom of this page and submit to Sherry@NNVMath.org. This position works with children and requires a background check through Nevada Math’s background check provider and completion of applicable UNR paperwork.

Family Math Nights

Family Math Nights are very dependent upon volunteers. Schools partner with us to bring puzzles, games, art, and other activities that have a math, logic, or strategic basis. The activities range and we guaranty that no matter what your comfort (or discomfort) level with math is, there is an activity waiting for you!
